hippo birdie

Hey everyone. Becca continues to do well. It's been a week since she started the tamoxifen. I believe her exact words were "Bring it." It's like she's become some kind of drug side-effect Rambo. No weird menopause-y things yet, but we hear that could take another month or so (hoo boy can't wait). She is still fatigued at times but it is infrequent enough that it is hard to tell if it is a lingering radiation effect or just plain living in this house.

Today we wrapped up Jack's baseball season, went to Rachel's penultimate softball game, and celebrated my 41st birthday with a small party including Allison, Juan, Antonio, Sydney, and Mom and Dad. My special birthday treat was to have Sydney on my lap gumming a spoon for most of the meal.

October so far has been filled with happy and sad reminders of how lucky we are to be here, now. We had a weekend on the Cape celebrating my grandfather Davy's 90th birthday, and in the middle of it all winged our way out to Norhampton to catch Girlyman as a birthday present from our buddies Megan and William, who managed an even lengthier trip from the other direction (Rochester!). And yes, this prooves you can still do crazy college-y things after 40.

So all that joy only to come home and find a terrible car accident took the lives of both parents of a friend of Sammy's here in Medfield. The community is devastated. No other cars were involved, so we are not even likely to know any explanation anytime soon; all we have is the crushing sadness for this 6-yr-old and his little sister.

Scooter knows nothing about this, because he is a kitten. While we ponder the meaning of life and how quickly and senselessly it can be taken away, Scooter has discovered his tail for like the 200th time and is now attacking it with wreckless abandon. Kittens rock.
