the squirrel scourge

During this ordeal I'm sure you have have wondered more than once, as have I, is there anything Becca is actually afraid of? Wonder no more. Becca walked into the house this afternoon to find a squirrel in our living room. She totally lost it. Started screaming my name repeatedly hysterically. This was at a level that one should normally reserve for something awful happening to one's child, which is of course what I feared as I leapt down the stairs from the office... to find a squirrel, smaller than our cat, probably absolutely terrified out of his mind.

I opened the door, fetched a broom, and tried to make a lot of noise to get him out the door. But the squirrel decided instead to bolt back through the living room and up the stairs and into my office. Fast as lightening; man those buggers can move. So I shut the door and he sat on one of my keyboards while we called animal control. I tried to coax him into writing a blog post, but no go. I guess he was a little too harried to get any words down. Understood; happens to me all the time.

So the officer comes with a bunched-up sheet and she opens a window and talks to the squirrel like they are old friends "no buddy, that window is not going to do you any good, over here...". Within minutes she had coaxed him to the right one, through which he gladly dove -- two stories down to our concrete patio and scampered away. Needless to say, she left a superhero.

ANYWHO, happy 4th everyone. What a weekend. Absolutely gorgeous weather. We paid for it the week before though; nothing but dark clouds and rain. Yech. We nixed all of our far-away plans for the weekend and hung out with Tracy, Dave, and Normmy in Wellesley for a cookout. Even there though Becca pushed herself a little too much. It's hard because she really is going a bit stir crazy being housebound for so long. We meet with our plastics doc again on Tuesday, at which point she will hopefully get the drain out and be cleared to drive again. And back for more Herceptin on Wednesday.

Many thanks to our food providers too. Wednesday Jen brought delicious fish for Becca and Sammy and yummy turkey burger tacos for the rest of us, and then Friday Cindy treated us to scrumptiously marinated steak strips. Cindy also gets the dubious distinction of being the first one, to our knowledge, to actually bleed for our dinner. Her hand and her knife apparently had a bit of a disagreement. Yeow! Luckily her sister the e.r. nurse was over in a flash, and Cindy's hand is heavily bandaged but on the mend. Get well soon, Cindy, we're so sorry and though it's small consolation the dinner was, um, really good.

  1. that animal control lady sounds like when mom talks to flies, convincing them they would like outside much better...
